If your team already has Visio licenses and someone has built a decent oilfield stencil library, you can produce tidy, consistent well diagrams with it — genuinely tidier than PowerPoint, with reusable shapes and better alignment tools. Visio earns its keep for org charts, process flows and network diagrams. But the stencils are still pictures: nothing in Visio knows that a 9 5/8" casing can't fit inside a 7" one, that a liner starts at its hanger, or what a deviation survey is.

Why the difference compounds

The gap between a diagramming tool and an engineering renderer shows up at review time. In Visio, correctness is the author's job on every edit: every depth label, every relative width, every overlap between a liner top and the previous shoe. Reviewers can only check what they can see, so errors that look plausible survive.

In Well Schema, the drawing is a projection of well data — casing tables, cement tops, survey stations. If the reviewer trusts the data (which they can read directly), the geometry follows. That's also what makes versions meaningful: two versions differ in engineering content, not in how carefully someone nudged shapes that week.
